On Reflection
To be frank, we expected dozens of these fun, colourful, boppy rhythm-action titles to have
appeared on the scene, and maybe that’s why we gave it a rather cruel six at the time. On
reflection, as the title says, this remains unique, and with the additional DLC that’s recently
appeared, we’d like to retract somewhat and recommend it.
The Score
There’s a line in True Romance where Clarence Worley says: “It’s better to have a gun and not
need it, then to need a gun and not have it”. Amazingly, that’s exactly how we feel about Boom
Boom Rocket. We were gagging for a decent rhythm action game before BBR’s arrival, and while
we played the hell out of it when it was first available on Partnernet, it’s now been forgotten,
probably because Guitar Hero II effectively does the same thing. Our biggest issue with BBR is
its lack of variety: there are only ten songs to choose from, you continually play against the
same backdrop and the lack of online play (while understandable) greatly angers us. Like
Lumines Live! before it this feels more like a starter before the main course (in the form of
updates) comes along. You’ll certainly enjoy it, but unlike an everlasting gobstopper, it’s not
going to last you forever.
