We almost miss the dawn of ultimate fighting in the early Nineties, where martial arts specialists from every conceivable discipline could duel it out with no weight restrictions and even fewer rules than the UFC today. The Gerard Gordeau versus Royce Gracie match was like watching a grizzly bear fight an Amazonian python, so in a way it’s a shame that the UFC has been gentrified to become less of a show and more of a sport. But although it’s evolved beyond its original purpose, the brainchild of the Gracie family has been most effective proving which martial arts are the ultimate.
