Natal dev: Natal will spawn new genres of videogames
360 recently interviewed Johnny Chung Lee, the motion control celebrity who is now working on Project Natal. We asked what kind of games he thought Natal would enable, and if the technology will spawn entirely new genres that we hadn’t seen before. To give you a little teaser of the interview, here’s what he had to say:
360: Do you think Natal is likely to spawn entirely new genres of videogame?
Johnny Chung Lee: “Almost certainly. Most of the current game genres are optimized for the input device that was available. With the additional of motion and pointing sensing, we’ve already seen several great examples where developers are exploring novel kinds of gaming experiences.
“The lines blur between game categories, and the lines blur between control mechanics. Natal provides a very different set of input capabilities than your typical game pad. To really take advantage of those capabilities, new kinds of experiences will have to be explored.”
Lee also said that Natal won’t necessarily be more geared toward casual gamers and that the technology will be very entirely compatible with the regular 360 controller. But… you’re gonna have to check out issue 54 of 360 Magazine for the full interview. Yep, we’re cock-teases.
Natal will be a bore for around a year, until the first decent games arrive. And the novelty factor may not carry it for that long in the current climate. This stuff isn’t fresh any more
DEll u r thinking about this very small could you imagine shaking the controller and having it reload for your shooters or being able to chuck your arm liek a grenade to toss it having natal will free up a lot of simple functions for games and give your controller more use more buttons to have a better ecperience games will be adding a whole nother level of detail now because of this
my favorite new genre will be interactive point of view porno games, that’s all natal is good for.
Fighting games? Racing games? Even platformers could take on a whole new life. And imagine the peripherals…actually having something resembling a gun which you use in a fps? Sure, the light gun has been done before…but this could take it to a whole new level.
i think microsoft assume that everyone who plays the 360 has money to spend. i am a huge fan of the 360 allways have been but i dont have much money i do work but the missus has a huge say what i spend my money on i have real issues trying to justify to her that the latest 360 game is essential to my collection, i can allready see the arguments coming for the natal and the games that come with it. can we not see a reduction in some of the prices for gaming fans who want but cant have because of wifes girlfreinds etc? please microsoft consider the bullied people like myself. i really want natal to do well and have good games but a little easier to buy.
