In an interview with Develop, Square Enix Europe CEO Phil Rogers has stated that downloadable content is now “a massive part of” the company’s business.
“How we offer content to consumers via digital download is very important to us,” said Rogers, “and premium downloadable content is an absolute must for the titles that we launch.”
Obviously, that neatly summarises Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, revealed last month as a full-scale spin-off Tomb Raider title, and which Rogers describes as ““not as an experiment in a hit or miss way, but actually as a way to meet new consumer demand.”
We can’t wait to see what’s next, but hopefully it’ll be more than a few downloadable outfits for Final Fantasy XIII or something. In fact, Rogers went on to say during the interview that future Squenix games may well come as episodic content.
The power of Live, ladies and gentlemen. Only weeks after Manchester-based Dark Energy announced its long-developed watery action title Hydrophobia was going download-only, as a kind of ‘flagship’ Microsoft first-party title, Square Enix now seems to be joining the party, too. Is this the end of solid-state media, I hear you cry? Too early to say, but it’ll be interesting to see who next expresses a vocal allegiance to the Download Side as solid state media slowly looses its grasp on our minds and pockets.
